How to pick up things in minecraft pocket edition?

I never played minecraft. I just started. This is my first time playing this game and I can't pick up things like gold, diamonds, red stone, I tried with with the pickaxe with it didn't work. Can someone explain me how this works. And also I wanna know how can I use the apples I have a lot of them
