How to install.zip mods minecraft 1.8?

I have Minecraft 1.8 and the compatible version of forge and im actually new to modding minecraft so ive looked everywhere but i cant find what i need. I downloaded a transformers mod for minecraft 1.7.10 but on the website it said it would work for 1.8 so i downloaded it and put the zip file in my mods folder but its not detecting the mod so when i start up MC the mod isnt there, i also tried making the default program to open the zip file with winrar which of i have the most current version yet its not working
