Minecraft download help?!

i have a pc running windows 8 and i want to get minecraft for it. When i downloaded the launcher, it says its the launcher for 1.6.11 minecraft, not the most recent 1.8.4! How do i get the newest update? Does it only update when you register an account? I used the msi option to download the launcher off minecrafts website. Please help!
