How to download minecraft mods? - 2

So i tried downloading mods one time and i was told i needed forge, but i think forge had turned into a virus because it broke and shut me out of my laptop. So are there any new simple ways to download mods? That for sure wont have any negative affects on my laptop? I have windows eight if thats any needed info xD but if you can help thanks i appreciate it ^~^
