How to shut down clever jerks?

I was playing Minecraft last night (I rarely ever play it) and this guy was really being a d*** to me. The only reason I can think of for him being like that is because I was seriously criticizing this annoying 10 year old kid on the server.

Last night I asked him about his name and he responded with something like "I suppose it would be that way, if you pronounce it like an idiot, sure"
I asked him what was the idiot way (I'm kinda stupid, I should've known he meant how I pronounced it) but then no reply.

Then I got muted for a seriously stupid reason and I asked why they muted me and he said "because we don't like you" "we don't want to see your name in chat"

I came back at this with, "cool, keep impressing your 11 year old friends, f*g"
He responded with: "thats hardly the plan"
Then later I said, "lol old mods think theyre the f***ing sh**" because he was a moderator on the server a year ago.

How do I respond to these people? He obviously is very arrogant and with him being clever he wasn't going to let me tell if he was offended or not. How do I deal with these people?
