Whats the best desktop for gaming?

So i saved up around 1,000 for a new computer, and I love gaming such as Minecraft and whatnot (don't make fun) and i don't know a lot about computers. I'm also going to be a freshman so will need it for school work so i would like a fast effective computer. Does anyone have a recommended good gaming desktop? Also my brother knows a lot about this stuff and tells me he can build one, but i'm a little hesitant at that. Would it be better for him to build me one? Hes 26. Thanks!
