Can you use the MINCRAFT DISC on an XBOX 360 WITHOUT XBOX LIVE?

ok so my stepbrother was going to buy the minecraft game for our xbox 360 (The CD version) and was just wondering if you need an xbox live account to play it, before he wastes his money?
