How to play minecraft on two players?

So I can play online or offline. Have an HDMI cord hooked up. But my boys cannot figure out how to play split screen/2 players. It's ps3 edition. I've googled this and cannot find any answers and need help. I have an hdtv flat screen. I can't figure out what the problem is. Please help. While playing, nothing happens when they press the start button on the second paddle.
