What game console should I buy my kids?

I am looking to buy my kids a game console. So far they have been playing on my old school Nintendo and Game cube as well as some games online. They are boys, 7 and 8. Minecraft is a must and my son would love to play games like Halo, but I would also like some more younger games similar to lego, mario, etc. Also I would love to save money if possible. For example, would it be a mistake to buy an Xbox 360 instead of an Xbox One?
