Why does a beta video game cost $70 to preorder?

I remember back in 2009 I got minecraft alpha for a measly $8.50 and it arguably turned out to be the most talked about game of the modern era. How come these large video game companies realize that kids are not made of money and $70 means not eating for half a month.
