What is the risk of Port Forwarding?

MINECRAFT. I want to open up my own server for minecraft through of course, port forwarding. This is done of course, through my ip and internet system. My parents are SUPER paranoid about hackers hacking into our ip and getting our information and using it. I want to know the risks of Port Forwarding and how likely and or how lethal the risks are.
