Why can't I break or place blocks in Minecraft?

I have a server running with Hamachi in vanilla Minecraft. It was working fine last night when my friend and I were building on it. Today, I ran the server and when I get in, I realize I can't break any blocks or place them, and I also can't open doors. I looked around on Google for a while and found a YouTube video with a fix that worked at first but then caused more issues. The fix was to take yourself into gamemode 0 (it's survival mode), but now it doesn't work and the additional issue is that when I put myself into survival mode, in about 4 seconds, I randomly die with a message that says,"ItsDarkSkills has suffocated in a wall!" Mind you, I'm not close to a wall. It just happens for no reason. So my issues are: 1.Can't break/place blocks or open doors. 2. When I enter survival, I die almost instantly of suffocation in a wall. By the way, this is 1.9.4 Minecraft. If you have any tips or know how to fix this stupid issue/bug, please make an attempt to answer. Thanks!
