Any ideas on how to get a child to read?

My son is 12. He is literally failing in language arts. His reading comprehension is poor. All he wants to do is video games. I banned fun activities for today. I gave him a book he picked out. Then stuck him in his room told him to read. I come back and he was sleeping! I got him up he said he was bored and wanted to play Minecraft. I'm having to sit in his room to make him read! Any ideas on what to do?
