How to download mods on Minecraft?

I know from watching so many other videos that you obviously need the.bin file. But when i go to minecraft on my finder (its a mac). I cant seem to find the.bin file in minecraft. But i can see resource packs, saves,logs, and mods. I have tried repeatedly to put the mod i want (the lucky block mod) in that mod folder but it wont work. I have also downloaded forge but it still did not work.
